Patient is an 85 year old female with chronic sacral ulcer present for over three months. Patient has had significant weight loss and is currently on hospice and is bed bound. Her brother, who is power of attorney, has requested that we do whatever possible to help close the wound so that his sister does not die with a wound. Standard of care has been applied to this wound using iodosorb ointment and bordered foam on a three times a week basis. Patients' comorbidities include protein malnutrition and advanced Alzheimer's disease as well as hypothyroidism. Patient has a wound that measures 0.6cm x 0.4cm x 0.4cm. Inflammatory markers were negative.
Methods: Patient underwent wound bed preparation at this visit and application of Kerecis Omega-3 Micro 4cm². The wound was subsequently covered with bordered foam dressing.
Results: Patient was evaluated by hospice nurse approximately five days later. Patient's wound had closed.
Discussion: the benefit of piscine skin substitute is evident even in cases which normally would not be considered for its use. In this case, a patient with protein malnutrition at high risk for chronic wound is evident by the failure to heal, using conservative methods underwent treatment and subsequent closure within one week of application.
Discussion:
This patient went on to live for another nine months prior to expiring. The cost of decreased wound care and patient suffering in this situation was immeasurable.
